DISA is going through the process of moving a bunch of jobs (and workers) as part of a national military realignment to Fort Meade, Maryland. They have built this "telework" center at Fort Meade but it only supports 10 users. Hmmm.... call me crazy but that doesn't sound like too much when you have over 6000 employees. No worries they're going to expand to 50 in a couple months ;) I guess its better to something than nothing at all.
The way it goes in the DC Metro area, most folks in NoVA hate commuting to MD and folks in MD hate commuting down to NoVa. If 4000 or so DISA employees work in NoVa, my guess is they probably live in NoVA. So why build the telework centers at Fort Meade? Defense officials say to "build a Maryland-centric work force". Why not do it the other way around and build them in the NoVA area - isn't it better to keep exiting staff and give them the opportunities to telecommute from home or remote sites closer to home?
In any case, once they move all those jobs to their new HQ in Anne Arundel County, they will lose a ton of people if they force them to drive to Fort Meade. There are just too many jobs/opportunities around NoVA (even DC) and people's tolerance for long commutes are dropping quickly. I can't imagine how ugly that commute would be for someone living in Fairfax, Loudoun or Prince William Counties.
